Bravais Lattice
Bravais Lattice – Introduction: A Bravais lattice is a repeating three-dimensional array of atoms, ions, or molecules. The atoms, ions, or molecules are arranged so that they are in contact with their nearest neighbors, forming a crystal structure.
A Bravais lattice is a mathematical model that helps to understand the structure of crystals. In a Bravais lattice, each point in the crystal assigned to a lattice point, and also the points arranged in a grid. There are 14 possible Bravais lattices, and also each one has a specific structure.
However the simplest Bravais lattice is the one-dimensional lattice, which consists of a single line of points. The two-dimensional lattice has points arranged in a grid, and also the three-dimensional lattice has points arranged in a grid with cubes.
The Bravais lattice can also used to model the structure of a crystal. Therefore the lattice points represent the atoms in the crystal, and the arrangement of the points can help to understand how the atoms arranged
14 – Types of Bravais Lattice
However the Bravais lattice is a set of fourteen three-dimensional space groups, each of which generated by a combination of the translation operators, the reflection operators, the glide reflection operators and the inversion operators.
There are 14 Bravais lattices in total. They are:
1) Primitive Lattice
2) Body-Centered Lattice
3) Face-Centered Lattice
4) Tetragonal Lattice
5) Hexagonal Lattice
6) Rhombohedral Lattice
7) Orthorhombic Lattice
8) Monoclinic Lattice
9) Triclinic Lattice
10) Cubic Lattice
11) Simple Hexagonal Lattice
12) Simple Tetragonal Lattice
13) Simple Orthorhombic Lattice
14) At last it also includes Simple Monoclinic Lattice
