Deforestation, excessive grazing, mining, and quarrying are some human activities responsible for land degradation. Mining sites get abandoned after excavation, leaving extensive scars and overburdening residues. States like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha have suffered severe land degradation as a result of deforestation brought on by mining. But the number one cause of land degradation in areas like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra is overgrazing. Overirrigation causes land degradation in Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh because water logging causes soil salinity and alkalinity to rise. There are several approaches to addressing the issue of land degradation. Afforestation and effective grazing management can assist to some extent.
