Human Heart and Circulatory System – Introduction to Left Ventricle and Right Ventricle
The human heart is a four-chambered organ that pumps blood throughout the body. The heart is divided into two halves, the left and the right. Each half contains two chambers, the atria and the ventricles. The left ventricle is the largest and most powerful chamber of the heart. It pumps blood out of the heart and into the aorta, the large artery that carries blood to the body. The right ventricle is smaller and weaker than the left ventricle. It pumps blood out of the heart and into the pulmonary artery, the artery that carries blood to the lungs.
Structure of the Ventricles
The ventricles are the two large, lower chambers of the heart. The right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs, and the left ventricle pumps blood to the rest of the body. The ventricles are made up of four chambers: the right atrium, the left atrium, the right ventricle, and the left ventricle.
The right atrium is the upper chamber on the right side of the heart. The right atrium receives blood from the body. The right atrium empties blood into the right ventricle.
The left atrium is the upper chamber on the left side of the heart. The left atrium receives blood from the lungs. The left atrium empties blood into the left ventricle.
The right ventricle is the lower chamber on the right side of the heart. The right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs.
The left ventricle is the lower chamber on the left side of the heart. The left ventricle pumps blood to the rest of the body.
Shape of the Left and Right Ventricles
The shape of the left and right ventricles can be described as either spherical or ovoid. The ventricles are the two lower chambers of the heart that pump blood out of the heart. The left ventricle is larger and thicker than the right ventricle because it has to pump blood against the pressure of the blood returning to the heart. The right ventricle is smaller and thinner because it only has to pump blood to the lungs.
