One example of evolution is antibiotic resistance. Bacteria that are exposed to antibiotics will sometimes mutate so that the antibiotic can no longer kill them. These bacteria will then reproduce, passing on the resistance to their offspring. This is how antibiotic resistance spreads.
Factors Causing Evolution as per Lamarckism Theory
Lamarckism theory of evolution states that an organism’s characteristics can be passed down to its offspring. The main factor that causes evolution as per Lamarckism theory is the use and disuse of organs. According to Lamarckism, an organism’s characteristics can be passed down to its offspring if the organism uses or disuses its organs. For example, if an organism uses its muscles a lot, the muscles will become stronger. The offspring of the organism will then inherit the stronger muscles.
Example in Support of Lamarckism
A good example of Lamarckism in action can be found in the case of a giraffe. Giraffes have long necks because their ancestors stretch their necks to eat leaves from high trees. The stretching of the neck caused the muscles in the neck to grow larger and stronger. The next generation of giraffes inherited these stronger muscles, and so they were also able to stretch their necks to eat leaves from high trees. This process continued over many generations, until the giraffes had long necks.
