Electrode

An electrode is a conductor that is attached to the surface of a metal or other object to provide a path for electricity to flow into or out of it. The electrode is the part of a battery or electrical circuit that is in contact with the electrolyte.

Cathode: The electrode where reduction occurs, i.e. the electrode where current flows from the external circuit into the cell.

Anode: The electrode where oxidation occurs, i.e. the electrode where current flows from the cell into the external circuit.

Types of Electrodes

There are three types of electrodes:

1) Active electrodes: These are the electrodes that are in direct contact with the tissue to be treated.

2) Reference electrodes: These are used to measure the electrical potential of the tissue.

3) return electrodes: These are used to complete the electrical circuit.
