Hybridization | Types and Examples of Hybridization

What is Hybridization?

Hybridization | Types and Examples of Hybridization: Hybridization is a process in which two different species of organisms mate to produce a hybrid offspring. The process of hybridization can occur naturally, or it can be induced in a lab.

    Types of Hybridization

There are three types of hybridization:

    • sp hybridization: two orbitals on different atoms are filled with two electrons each.
    • sp2 hybridization: one orbital on each atom is filled with two electrons, and one orbital is left empty.
    • sp3 hybridization: one orbital on each atom is filled with two electrons, and two orbitals are left empty.

Nature of the Types of Hybridization

    • In chemistry, hybridization is the process of mixing atomic orbitals of different atoms to form new hybrid orbitals suitable for the chemical bonding of that molecule. Hybridization involves the overlap of atomic orbitals of different atoms, which results in the formation of new atomic orbitals.
    • The types of hybridization are sigma (σ), pi (π), and delta (δ).
    • Sigma hybridization occurs when the orbitals of two atoms overlap in a head-on fashion. In sigma hybridization, one atomic orbital combines with the other to form a new, hybrid orbital.
    • Pi hybridization occurs when the orbitals of two atoms overlap in a side-by-side fashion. In pi hybridization, two atomic orbitals combine to form two new, hybrid orbitals.
    • Delta hybridization occurs when the orbitals of two atoms overlap in a back-to-back fashion. In delta hybridization, three atomic orbitals combine to form three new, hybrid orbitals.
