The Fun They Had Summary – Class 9 English Beehive

In the year 2157, Margie is writing in her diary about Tommy discovering a book. Tommy’s granddad wrote this book when he was a child. Margie realises that all of the stories were printed on paper back in the day. They read the book and find the sensation of turning the pages amusing. It is amusing because they are not used to reading still words, just moving ones on a screen. We learn that there will be no books in the future, only telebooks. They keep them on their televisions and PCs.

The conversation then takes an intriguing turn as they talk about education. Margie discovers that education was considerably different back then. They had teachers who were real people. It’s unexpected because she’s only been taught by robots. Furthermore, she dislikes school for a variety of reasons. She has no classmates at the school where she studies. It doesn’t even have a playground or recess.

Tommy and Margie are studying in a virtual classroom. They have robots teaching them. Most importantly, her ‘school’ is only a few feet away from her bedroom. It’s an electrical, robotic, gadget-filled space. Everything taught to her via computer software. As a result, when she arrives at her new school, she begins to question her education. She can’t help but reflect back to her previous days as she starts studying.

Margie fantasises about how much fun her grandparents would have had. She imagined children from many neighbourhoods cheerfully attending school together. She also amused by the fact that they taught the same thing. It was due to the fact that everyone would assist one another with their assignments. As a result, she’s left thinking just how much fun they had.

    Conclusion of the chapter:

To summarise the enjoyment they experienced, this chapter sheds insight on rising technology and how it is sweeping the globe. As a result, it would not be strange if teachers were to replaced by robots in the near future. The extent to which technology will minimize human interaction is touched upon in this story and its vision for the future.
