Funding and the Member States
The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 28 member states located primarily in Europe. The EU has a budget of over €141.5 billion for 2014, and the largest share of this budget is dedicated to spending on research and development (R & R&D).
The EU member states are responsible for contributing to the EU budget. The amount that each state contributes is based on a formula that considers the size of the state’s economy and the number of its citizens. The largest contributors to the EU budget are Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.
