In the previous segment of Class 6 Maths, we discussed how to compare like fractions. Here let us learn how to compare unlike fractions.

    How to compare unlike fractions?

We know that if the denominators of all the fractions in a group of fractions are different, then they are known as Unlike fractions.

There are two methods to compare unlike fractions:

    (i) What is the LCM method of comparing unlike fractions?

The LCM method follows the principle of comparing unlike fractions by converting them into like fractions and then comparing them.

Consider two unlike fractions 2 and 5.

To compare two unlike fractions, we will use the following

    3 4

    steps:

Step 1: Consider the denominators of the unlike fractions.

Here, the denominators are 3 and 4.

Step 2: Find the LCM of the denominators.

    LCM of 3 and 4 is 12.

Step 3: Convert the denominators of each of the fractions to this LCM.

Here, we have to convert the denominators of 2 and 5 to the LCM we calculated in step

    3 4

    2, that is 12.
