How to compare unlike fractions using cross products?

Consider two fractions ? and ?.

    ? ?

To compare these two fractions we will consider the products

      • ad (the product of the numerator of the first fraction and the denominator of the second fraction)
      • bc (the product of the denominator of the first fraction and the numerator of the second fraction)

Then compare these two products and determine the comparison of the fractions using the following concept:

    • If ?? < ??, then ? < ?

    ? ?

    • If ?? = ??, then ? = ?

    ? ?

    • If ?? > ??, ?ℎ?? ? > ?

    ? ?

Let us understand this with the help of some examples.

    (i) 3 ??? 7

    5 2

    To compare this, let us consider the products 3 × 2 = 6 ??? 7 × 5 = 35.

    Here, 6 < 5.

    That is, (3 × 2) < (7 × 5).

    Hence, 3 < 7

    5 2
