Rectangle Definition – Definition, Formula, Properties and Solved Example

Rectangle Definition

  • A rectangle is a two-dimensional figure with four straight sides. The two shorter sides are called the “base” and the “height” is the distance between the base and the top. The “width” is the distance between the two parallel sides.
  • A rectangle is defined as a two-dimensional geometric figure with four straight sides and four angles. The angles can be either right angles or acute angles, but they must add up to 360 degrees. Rectangles are one of the most basic shapes and are used in a variety of applications, from construction to art.

    Formula of Rectangle

    The formula of rectangle is A = bh, where A is the area of the rectangle, b is the base, and h is the height.

    Properties of Rectangle

    A rectangle has four straight sides and four 90-degree angles. It is a two-dimensional figure with a finite area. A rectangle is a four-sided figure with four right angles. The length of a rectangle is measured from one corner to the opposite corner. The width of a rectangle is measured from one edge to the other edge. A rectangle has two diagonals. The length of a diagonal is the length of a side of the rectangle divided by the square root of 2. The width of a diagonal is the width of a side of the rectangle divided by the square root of 2.

    Solved Example

    • Question

    A train has a length of 240 m and a speed of 72 km/hr. Calculate the time it will take for the train to travel the length of the track.

    • Solution

    The time it takes for the train to travel the length of the track is 3 minutes and 36 seconds.

    Example

    • Question:

    Find the perimeter of a rectangle whose sides are 10cm and 5cm, respectively.

    • Solution:

    Given:

    a = 10 cm

    b = 5 cm

    According to the properties of a rectangle, the perimeter of a rectangle is:

    Perimeter, P = 2a +2b units

    P = 2 (a+b) units

    Now, substitute the values

    P = 2(10+5)

    P = 2(15)

    P = 30 cm

    Therefore, the perimeter of a rectangle is 30 cm.
