FRICTION

CHAPTER 12_FRICTION

NCERT TEXTUAL EXERCISES

1. Fill in the blanks.

a) Friction opposes the relative motion between the surface in contact with each other.

b) Friction depends on the nature of surfaces.

c) Friction produces

d) Sprinkling of powder on the carrom board reduces.

e) Sliding friction is smaller than the static friction.

2. Four children were asked to arrange forces due to rolling, static, and sliding frictions in a decreasing order. Their arrangements are given below. Choose the correct arrangement.

a) Rolling static, sliding b) Rolling, sliding, static

c) Static, sliding, rolling d) Sliding, static, rolling

Ans:

3. Alida run her car on dry marble floor. Wet marble floor, news paper and towel spread on the floor. The force of friction acting on the car on different surfaces in increasing order will be.

a) Wet marble floor, dry marble floor, newspaper and towel.

b) Newspaper, towel, dry marble floor, wet marble floor.

c) Towel, newspaper, dry marble floor, wet marble floor.

d) Wet marble floor, dry marble floor, towel, newspaper

Ans: a) Wet marble floor, dry marble floor, newspaper and towel.

4. Suppose your writing desk is tilted a little. A book kept on it starts sliding down. Show the direction of frictional force acting on it.

Ans: Frictional force will act upwards i.e., direction opposite to that of sliding book.

5. You spill a bucket of soapy water on a marble floor accidently. Would it make it easier or more difficult for you to walk on the floor ? Why.

Ans: It is difficult to walk on a soapy floor because soapy floor applies very less friction and hence we can slip on such floor.

6.Explain why sports men use shoes with spikes.

Ans: It is done to provide the shoes better grip on the ground, so it increases the friction and prevent slipping.

7. Iqbal has to push a lighter box and Seema has to push a similar heavier box on the same floor. Who will have to apply a larger force and why ?

Ans: We know that the force of friction is increased if the two surfaces pressed harder. A heavier box will apply more pressure on the floor and hence Seema will experience more frictional force.

8. Explain why sliding friction is less than static friction

Ans: 1) The sliding friction is less than static friction because of the inter locking of irregularities in the two surfaces.

2) When the object starts sliding the contact points on its surface do not get enough time to lock into the contact points on the floor.

3) So the sliding friction is less than static friction.

9. Give examples to show that friction is both a friend and foe.

Ans: Friction as a Foe : Machine parts that come in contact with one another wear out because of friction. Similarly the soles of our shoes wear out because of friction.

Friction as a Friend : Frictional force is very useful in several situations. If there were no friction between the wheels and the road, no vehicle would be able to move. If there were no brakes for a bicycle there would be many accidents.

10. Explain why object moving in fluids must have special shapes ?

Ans: When object move through fluids they have to overcome the friction acting on them. Efforts are therefore made to minimize the friction so objects are given special shapes. Idea of such shapes come from the body structure of birds and fishes. Which have to move about in fluids all the time. Such shapes are called streamlined. Giving such shapes to the ships, plane and cars is called streamlining.

11. Can we reduce friction to zero by polishing surface (or) using large amounts of lubricants?

Ans: No, Friction can never be entirely eliminated. No surface is perfectly smooth. Same irregularities are always there.
