Solution:
The two social movements launched against multi-purpose projects are Narmada Bachao Andolan and Tehri Dam Andolan. The development of multi-purpose projects and large dams cause the removal of large areas of forests and lands, promoting deforestation and, in turn, global warming. The lack of rehabilitation centres for people who have been displaced due to these reasons is becoming a reason of concern for society. To protect the community, Narmada Bachao Andolan was initiated by Medha Patkar along with native tribes, farmers, environmentalists, and human rights activists in the mid-1980s, and in 1990 people of Uttarakhand started Tehri Dam Andolan because damming the river would lead to flooding of the town and the displacement of up to ten thousand of its residents.
