    1. ‘I call it my chicken drumstick/ joked Nick. What does ‘it’ refer to? How does it help him?
    A. ‘It’ refers to the small foot on Nick’s left hip, which looks like a chicken drumstick. Nick feels that he would do nothing if he doesn’t have that small foot. It helps him j balance and enables him to kick. It helps him as a propeller while swimming and moving. He uses his small foot to type, write with a pen and pick things up be­tween his toes.

    2. Why does Mrs. Slater decide to shift the bureau from her father’s room before the arrival of the Jordans? How does Henry react to the suggestion?
    A. Mrs. Slater is a greedy woman. She wants to steal the bureau of her father. The bureau is a fine piece of furniture. She wants to take the bureau into her posses­Sion. She is sure that the Jordans have no idea about the bureau as they have made their last visit before the bureau is bought. She doesn’t want her sister to have ashare of the bureau which she has always been longing for. She decides to shift the bureau from her father’s from before the arrival of the Jordans because she thinks that Mrs. Jordan will take that bureau as her share of her father’s property.
    Henry wonders at the idea of Mrs. Slater and says that he cannot help to carry it as the bureau is strong and heavy. And he doubts whether the Jordans will come ; while he and his wife are shifting the bureau from the old man’s room. He suggests here to settle the matter with Elizabeth.

    3. What does thephrase ‘opposite directions’ in the last sentence,suggest ?
    A. When the bus started moving, the author saw his father gradually receding into , the distance. The author felt that their journeys started in two opposite directions,
    with him seated in the luxurious seat of a bus and father walking back-with tired legs on the pebble-strewn road. The phrase‘opposite directions’suggests that both their directions were different. In the other sense, the writer’s way was a luxuri­ous one as he was an educated one and a government officer. He didn’t need to lead such a hard and laborious life like his father used to lead.

    4. What did Ray’s detractors accuse him of ? Did Roberge agree to their accusation? If not, why ?
    A. Ray’s detractors accused Ray that he made reputation selling India’s poverty to . the West. Roberge does not agree with this. He feels that there is enormous spiri­tual poverty of some rich people which is much more deplorable than the material poverty depicted in the films.

    5. Why did Bayaji return home?
    A. Bayaji, a Dalit, left his native village to work as a labourer in the dockyard of Bombay. After reaching the age of sixty he retired and returned home hoping to settle into his ancestral village. He had imbibed many new ideas through his three decades and a half sojourn in the metropolitan city of Bombay. And he was also keen to demonstrate to his village community that he had done well, and was successful. He wanted to use his life savings to build a house.

    6. How are people’s basic needs connected with the environment?
    A. The basic needs of people are clean drinking water, food, firewood, timber and fodder for animals. All these come from land. As we know, land is connected with environment.

    7. “Your children are not your children What does it mean? Do you agree with the statement or disagree ? Give reasons.
    A. These words were spoken by Kalam’s father, Jainulabdeen in the context of his wife’s hesitation to send Kalam to Ramanathapuram. He told his wife the expres­sion “Your children are not your children” means as children are growing they have their own ideas. I agree with the idea of Kalam’s father because children have every right to form their own thoughts and ideas. The environment in society ‘ helps children to develop an individual attitude. Parents should take it easy.

    8. If the writer had seen the second day’s game on the first day, what would he have thought about it ?
    A. The narrator’s general conviction was that in his country’ Jamaica, all the people – blacks and whites, live in harmony and they do not distinguish each other with their colour and creed. Hence, if the narrator had seen the second day’s game on the first day, he would have realised it as a game and would not have excited over it.

    9. List the comic elements in the play ‘The Dear Departed’.
    A. There are many comic elements in the play ‘The Dear Departed’. All the elements in this play are sarcastic.

    A. Abraham Lincoln faced many setbacks in his life. At the age of 21, he failed in business. At the age of 22, he was defeated in a legislative race. He failed once again in business at the age of 24. He overcame the death of his sweetheart at the age of 26. He had a nervous breakdown at the age of 27. He lost a congressional race at the age of 34 and a senatorial race at the age of 49. But he did not stop contesting in elections. Finally he got the biggest success and became the Presi­dent of the United States of America with firm determination. Thus he proved that defeat was a detour and not a dead end. This is all his courage, will power, dedica­tion and determination that helped him get the biggest success in life.
