Mesonephros Definition; Development
The mesonephros is the functional kidney of the embryonic and fetal periods. It is a transient organ that degenerates and is replaced by the permanent kidney, the metanephros. The mesonephros arises from the intermediate mesoderm and consists of a series of tubules that empty into the cloaca.

Development in Mesonephros
The mesonephros is the first kidney to develop in the embryo. It begins to form around the 4th week of development, and is fully formed by the 8th week.
