Mitochondria

Mitochondria are organelles in the cell that are responsible for producing energy. They do this by breaking down glucose and other molecules to create adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the energy currency of the cell. Mitochondria also play a role in cell signaling and apoptosis (programmed cell death).

What is a Mitochondrion?

Mitochondria are organelles in the cells of plants and animals. They are responsible for producing energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Structure of Mitochondria

• The mitochondria are rod-shaped organelles that are found in the cytoplasm of all eukaryotic cells. They are unique in that they are the only organelles that possess their own DNA. Mitochondrial DNA is circular and is inherited from the mother.
• The mitochondria are responsible for the production of energy in the cell. They do this by breaking down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids to create a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
• The mitochondria are also responsible for the synthesis of certain proteins and lipids. They also play a role in apoptosis, or programmed cell death.

Functions of Mitochondria

The mitochondria is a small, rod-shaped organelle found in the cytoplasm of cells. It is the site of cellular respiration, the process that produces energy from food molecules. The mitochondria consists of an outer membrane and an inner membrane. The outer membrane is smooth and the inner membrane is folded into small folds called cristae. The mitochondria contains DNA and proteins that are responsible for the production of energy. The mitochondria also plays a role in the cell’s metabolism and apoptosis, or programmed cell death.
