What are Fractions?
Fractions are the numbers used to represent smaller pieces of a whole. Let us understand with the help of an example.
Harish and Haritha bought a pizza together. The pizza was cut into 12 slices. Harish had 7 slices
out of the 12 slices. So we can say Harish had 7
12
of the entire pizza. Haritha ate the remaining 5
slices out of the 12 slices. So Haritha had 5
12
parts of the entire pizza. Here, 7
12
and 5
12
are known
as fractions.
