    The Shehnai of Bismillah Khan

    This lesson aims to explore Indian classical musicians and their instruments, focusing on the Shehnai and its renowned player, Ustad Bismillah Khan. The Shehnai replaced the pungi because the pungi had a harsh sound. A craftsman named Shah improved the pungi’s sound, leading to the creation of the Shehnai.

    The lesson discusses Bismillah Khan’s early life in Dumraon, Bihar. His grandfather played the Shehnai in the Bhojpur king’s court. Bismillah Khan developed a love for music at a young age, around 3 years old, while learning from his uncle. He led a simple and harmonious life, singing at the Bihariji temple and practicing Shehnai at various temples in Varanasi.

    Bismillah Khan gained fame when he performed on All India Radio in Lucknow in 1938. He also played the Shehnai at the Red Fort on India’s Independence Day in 1947, with Pandit Nehru in attendance. He gave many memorable performances in India and abroad and received numerous awards. He even composed music for two movies, ‘Gunj Uthi Shehnai’ and ‘Sanadhi Apanna’.

    Despite receiving an offer to lead a Shehnai School in the USA, Bismillah Khan chose to stay loyal to his homeland, India, and its sacred places like Benaras and the Ganga river. In 2001, he was honored with India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna.

    In conclusion, Bismillah Khan’s life exemplifies India’s rich cultural heritage. He demonstrated that a devout Muslim like him could play the Shehnai at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, challenging misconceptions about the instrument’s religious boundaries.
