After completing his 12th grade, he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Pragathi Mahavidyalaya Degree and PG College in Ram Koti, Hyderabad. YS Jagan Mohan Reddy: Political Career

    Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, also known as YSR, served as the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh from 2004 to 2009. He began his political journey by campaigning for the Indian National Congress during the 2004 elections in Kadapa district. In 2009, he became a Member of Parliament from Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency.

After his father’s passing in September 2009, he aimed to carry on his father’s political legacy. Many legislators supported him to become the Chief Minister, but Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, party leaders, did not agree with this choice.

Six months after his father’s death, he started a condolence tour, as he had promised earlier, to visit the families of those who were said to have either committed suicide or faced health issues upon hearing about his father’s demise. The Congress party’s central leadership told him to stop the tour, but he continued anyway, stating that it was a personal matter. This led to a disagreement between him and the party’s high command.

2010–2014: Founding of YSR Congress Party

After a disagreement with the leadership of the Congress party, he stepped down from his position representing the Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency on November 29, 2010. He also left the party. His mother, Vijayamma, followed suit by resigning from the Pulivendula Assembly constituency and leaving the party as well.

On December 7, 2010, he declared from Pulivendula that he intended to establish a new political party within 45 days. In March 2011, he officially announced the launch of his new party, called the YSR Congress Party, in Jaggampeta, East Godavari district.

Subsequently, his party participated in by-elections in Kadapa district and achieved a landslide victory, winning nearly all the seats. Reddy, serving as the president of the YSR Congress Party, ran in the by-election for the Kadapa constituency and secured a substantial victory with a margin of 545,043 votes. His mother also triumphed in the Pulivendula Assembly constituency, defeating Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy by a margin of 85,193 votes.

2014–2019: Leader of opposition and Padayatra

In 2014, many experts and election analysts believed that the YSR Congress Party was likely to win the pre-elections. However, in the actual 2014 elections, they didn’t perform well, securing only 67 out of 175 seats in the state assembly with 45% of the votes. The Telugu Desam Party received 47% of the votes, leading to YSRCP’s defeat.

As the leader of the Opposition in the Assembly and the President of the YSR Congress Party, Mr. Reddy started a long walk known as “Praja Sankalpa Yatra” or “padayatra” on November 6, 2017. This journey covered 3,000 kilometers and began in Idupulapaya, Kadapa district. It lasted for 430 days, taking him through 125 Assembly segments across the state, and concluded on January 9, 2019. The YSR Congress party had a slogan for this walk, “Raavali Jagan, Kaavali Jagan,” which means “We want Jagan, Jagan should come.”

On October 25, 2018, while Mr. Reddy was boarding a flight to Hyderabad, he was attacked with a cockfighting knife in the VIP Lounge of Visakhapatnam Airport. This resulted in a laceration on his shoulder, and he had to undergo surgery.

    2019–present: Chief Minister

During the 2019 National and State elections held in April and May, the YSR Congress Party achieved a landslide victory in Andhra Pradesh. They secured 151 out of 175 assembly seats and 22 out of 25 Lok Sabha seats. Following this, their leader took office as the Chief Minister on May 30, 2019.

His tenure as Chief Minister has been notable for several welfare programs, such as Jagananna Amma Vodi and Navaratnalu. Jagananna Amma Vodi offers financial support to mothers or guardians living below the poverty line to help educate their children. Navaratnalu includes nine welfare schemes that benefit farmers, women, healthcare, education, and special categories of individuals.

One significant decision he made was to abandon the plan for a new capital in Amaravati, proposed by the previous TDP government. Instead, he suggested three different capitals for the judiciary, administration, and legislature – Kurnool, Amaravati, and Visakhapatnam, respectively. However, this proposal sparked widespread protests from Amaravati’s farmers.

In March 2022, the Andhra Pradesh High Court ruled that the government must continue developing Amaravati and stated that the government lacked the authority to make legislation to relocate or divide the capital.
