Globe: Latitudes and Longitudes, the second chapter of Class 6 Social Science Geography, introduces students to the concepts of latitude and longitude. It provides pupils with an understanding of the fundamental concepts of geography. Axis, equators, latitude, and longitude are among the topics they study. The Axis is a needle that is fixed in such a way that the earth spins around it, whereas the Equator is an imaginary line that splits the earth into two halves. Latitudes refer to all parallel circles that run up to the poles, whereas Longitudes refers to the line of reference that runs from the north pole to the south pole. They’re both measured in degrees. The chapters go on to explain the ideas of the Tropic of Cancer, the Tropic of Capricorn, the Arctic circle, and the Antarctic circle.

It also describes the world’s heat zones and the Earth’s heat zones, including the Torrid zone, which receives the most heat. Temperatures in the temperate zone are mild. Because the sun’s rays are continually slanting, the frigid zone has a cold environment.

Here all the latitudes and longitudes class 6 questions and answers form NCERT textbook:

      1. Answer the following questions briefly.

      a) What is the true shape of the Earth?

Ans. Earth is slightly flattened at the North and South Poles, and bulges in the middle.

The shape of the Earth is described as a ‘geoid’, that is, ‘an Earth-like shape’.

      b) What is a globe?

Ans. Globe is a true model (miniature form) of the Earth.

      c) What is the latitudinal value of the Tropic of Cancer?

Ans. The Tropic of Cancer lies 23½ ° north of the Equator.

      d) What are the three heat zones of the Earth?

Ans. The three heat zones of the Earth are the Torrid Zone, the Temperate Zone, and the Frigid Zone.

      e) What are the parallels of latitude and meridians of longitudes?

Ans. All parallel circles from the Equator up to the Poles are called parallels of latitudes. The lines of references running from the North Pole to the South Pole are called meridians of longitudes.

      f) Why does the Torrid Zone receive the maximum amount of heat?

Ans. The area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn is known as the Torrid Zone. The mid-day sun is exactly overhead at least once a year on all the latitudes in this area; hence, this area receives the maximum amount of heat. Sun rays fall vertically in these areas.

      g) Why is it 5.30 P.M. in India and 12 noon in London?

Ans. In London, the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is followed. The Indian Standard Meridian is located 82½° east of the Prime Meridian. Thus the Indian Standard Time (IST) is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of GMT. So, when it is 12 noon in London, it is 5.30 P.M. in India.
