Introduction to Composite Numbers
A composite number is a whole number that can be divided evenly by other whole numbers other than itself and 1. In other words, a composite number is a number that has multiple factors.
The number 12 is a composite number because it can be divided evenly by 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. The number 10 is not a composite number because it can only be divided evenly by 1 and 10.
Composite numbers are important in mathematics because they can be used to find prime numbers. A prime number is a number that can only be divided evenly by itself and 1. To find a prime number, you start with a composite number and keep dividing it by other numbers until you find a number that can’t be divided evenly anymore.
For example, let’s start with the number 12. We know that 12 is a composite number because it can be divided evenly by 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.
If we divide 12 by 2, we get 6. 6 is a composite number because it can be divided evenly by 1, 2, 3, and 6.
If we divide 6 by 3, we get 2. 2 is a prime number because it can only be divided evenly by itself and 1.
If we divide 12 by 3, we get 4. 4 is a composite number because it can be divided evenly by 1, 2, and 4.
If we divide 4 by 4, we get 1. 1 is not a prime number because it can only be divided evenly by itself.
We can continue this process until we find a composite number that can’t be divided evenly by any other number. For example, if we started with the number 14, we would eventually get to 7, which is a prime number.
Composite numbers are also known as “factors.” The number 1 is not a composite number because it can only be divided by 1. The number 4 is the first composite number because it can be divided by 1, 2, and 4.
List of Composite Numbers from 1 to 100
The list of composite numbers from 1 to 100 is as follows:
4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 42, 44, 45, 46, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 60, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 68, 69, 70, 72, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 80, 81, 82, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 98, 99, 100
Odd and Even Composite Numbers
Odd composite numbers are those that are both odd and composite.
There are many odd composite numbers between 1 and 100. Some of these are: 9, 15, 21, 25, 27, 33, 35, 39, 45, 49, 51, 55, 63, 65, 69, 75, 77, 81, 85, 87, 93, 99.
Even composite numbers are those that are both even and composite.
There are several even composite numbers between 1 and 100. Some of these numbers include: 4, 6, 8,, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 72, 74, 76, 78, 80, 82, 84, 86, 88, 90, 92, 94, 96, 98, and 100.
Properties of Composite Numbers That Distinguish Them From Other Numbers:
There are several properties of composite numbers that distinguish them from other numbers. For example, composite numbers are always divisible by at least one other number besides themselves and one. This means that if you take any composite number and divide it by any number other than one or itself, you will always get a whole number answer.
Another property of composite numbers is that they are never prime numbers. A prime number is a number that is only divisible by one and itself. Since composite numbers are divisible by numbers other than one and themselves, they can never be prime.
Lastly, composite numbers always have a factor other than one. A factor is a number that divides evenly into another number. So, for example, the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. As you can see, all of the factors of 12 are composite numbers except for 1. This is because 1 is the only number that can divide evenly into itself.
Composite numbers are an important part of mathematics and play a role in many different areas of the discipline. By understanding the properties that distinguish composite numbers from other numbers, students can better understand the role they play in mathematics.
