Exponents Logarithms – Explanation, Rules and FAQs

Exponents

An exponent is a number that is written as a superscript following another number, which is called the base. The exponent indicates how many times to multiply the base by itself. For example, the number 3 raised to the power of 2 is 3 multiplied by 3 multiplied by 3, or 27. The number 9 raised to the power of 0 is just 9.

    Logarithms

Logarithms are a mathematical function that are used to solve problems involving exponents. The logarithm of a number is the inverse of the exponential function. This means that the logarithm of a number is the power to which a base must be raised to produce the number.

    Log to Exponential

The logarithmic to exponential conversion is a mathematical process that transforms a logarithmic equation into an exponential equation. The process is accomplished by taking the natural logarithm of both sides of the equation, and then solving for the variable. The exponential equation is then used to solve the problem.

To convert an exponential expression to a logarithmic expression, divide the exponential expression by the base.

    Log Exponent Rules

The product of two numbers is the product of their individual exponents.

The quotient of two numbers is the quotient of their individual exponents.

    Exponent Rules:

    1. Any number to the power of 0 is 1.

    2. Any number to the power of 1 is the number itself.

    3. Any number to the power of 2 is the number multiplied by itself.

    4. Any number to the power of 3 is the number multiplied by itself multiplied by itself.

    5. Any number to the power of 4 is the number multiplied by itself multiplied by itself multiplied by itself.
