    • What’s Next?

In the previous segment, we learnt about chemical equation. In this segment, we will learn about balanced and unbalanced chemical equations.

What is a Balanced chemical equation?

In a chemical equation, when the number of atoms of each element on the reactants side is Equal to the number of atoms of each element on the products side, then it is known as a balanced chemical equation.

    For example,

    ?? + ????? → ????? + ??

Here, the number of atoms of Zn on the reactant side is equal to the number of atoms of Zn on

the product side, that is, 1.

Similarly, the number of atoms of H, S, and O on the reactant side are equal to their respective number of atoms on the product side. Thus the equation is a balanced chemical equation.

What is an Unbalanced chemical equation?

In a chemical equation, when the number of atoms of each element on the reactants side is Not Equal to the number of atoms of each element on the products side, then it is known as an unbalanced chemical equation.

    For example,

    ?? + ?? → ???

Here, the number of atoms of oxygen on the reactant side is 2 whereas that on the product

side is 1. Thus, they are not equal and hence, the equation is an unbalanced chemical equation.

What is the Law of conservation of mass?

Law of conservation of mass states that mass can neither be Created nor Destroyed in a chemical reaction. So, the total mass of elements present on the reactants side must be Equal to the total mass of elements on the products side.
