Short Essay on Impact of Global Warming on Oceans – Essay 1 (200 words)

Oceans are our prized possessions. They occupy a major part of the Earth and it is our duty to ensure that they are kept clean. However, human activities are only doing harm to the oceans around the world.

Global warming has become a big threat for the oceans in today’s times. The Earth’s temperature is rising constantly because of global warming which occurs due to the presence of harmful gases such as carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere. As noted by the researchers, the temperature of our planet has increased by up to 1.4 degree Fahrenheit since 1880. This has brought about numerous changes in the Earth’s atmosphere. Oceans have been worst effected due to this increase in the temperature.

The rapid rise in the release of harmful gases has made the oceans acidic. They are no longer fit for the proper growth and survival of the marine creatures. Global warming has also resulted in the melting of glaciers. This has resulted in the expansion of oceans and rise in the sea levels. Rising sea levels result in frequent floods in the coastal areas which disrupt the life of people living in those areas. Besides, oceans play a vital role in defining the Earth’s climate and these changes in the oceans has thus led to a change in the weather pattern.

Many species of creatures are suffering due to this change in the quality of ocean water. Several of these species are now extinct and many others are likely to disappear in the times to come.

    Introduction

Global warming has had a major effect on the ocean life. This global phenomenon has affected the ocean currents, raised the ocean level and caused the acidification of ocean water among numerous other adverse impacts it has had on these beautiful water bodies. Those living in the oceans as well as close-by have been adversely affected by the changes brought about in the oceans due to global warming.

Effect of Global Warming on Sea Creatures

The temperature of the oceans has increased because of global warming. The increased temperature is not fit for the survival of many marine animals. Many species of fishes, turtles and other sea animals are struggling to survive in this changed weather condition. As per the research, many marine species found it hard to adapt to the rise in the ocean water temperature and thus became extinct. The acidification of the oceans is also posing a threat to marine life. Further rise in the ocean temperature and acidification of ocean water due to global warming is likely to worsen the situation.

Effect of Global Warming on Coastal Areas

Not just the creatures living inside the oceans those living outside are also getting impacted due to the effects of global warming on the oceans. The glaciers are melting at a rapid speed due to global warming and this is resulting in the expansion of the oceans which in turn is resulting in the increase in sea levels. Those living along the coastal areas thus live in constant fear of floods. These areas are often hit by flood thereby disrupting life along the coastlines.

    Conclusion

Global warming is a major threat to the ocean life. Our oceans are no longer a safe aboard for the marine creatures. The constant rise in the ocean water level has also become a threat to those living in the coastal areas. It is sad that despite having complete knowledge about the harmful effects of global warming on ocean life, we human beings are not doing anything to control this problem.

Essay on Ocean Warming Effects on Marine Life – Essay 3 (400 words)

    Introduction

Global warming has resulted in the rise in Earth’s surface temperature. It has also increased the temperature of the oceans thereby making the ocean water warmer than before. This has affected the marine life badly.

Different species of flora and fauna require different climate and atmosphere to survive and lead a healthy life. Oceans have been home for numerous species of marine creatures since the beginning of the times. Marine creatures have enjoyed a safe and sound life in the vast and beautiful oceans since centuries but not anymore.

Ocean Warming Effects on Marine Life

Global warming has had numerous negative impacts on the oceans and this in turn has affected the marine life. Among the various marine species affected by ocean warming are different species of fishes, corals, seals, seabirds and penguins. Many of these species of marine creatures have not been able to survive the increase in the ocean temperature and several others are suffering. Here is how this has impacted some of them:

    • Fishes

Many varieties of fishes thrive for a particular temperature in order to live healthy and survive in the oceans. The constant rise in the temperature of ocean water has resulted in the extinction of many species of colourful and beautiful fishes.

    • Penguins

Penguins live in the Polar Regions and spend most of their lives in the ocean. They need cold water and extremely cold weather to survive. The warming of ocean water is thus taking a toll on their lives. They are not being able to withstand the changing climatic conditions of the oceans and incurring various diseases.

    • Seals

A large number of seals are found in the Pacific Ocean. The warming of the water of this ocean has led to sardines and anchovies move to colder areas. Seals feed largely on these two marine creatures and since they are slowly moving to the cooler regions, seals are starving to death. They are finding it hard to search for food for seal pups who are thus suffering from malnutrition and many other health problems.

    Conclusion

The overall environment of our planet and that inside the oceans was pure and calm until the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution has changed the face of the Earth. While it has brought about many positive changes in the life of man, it has been equally cruel on our environment. Our clean and beautiful oceans have especially been hit hard by this development and so has the marine life that was safe inside them until the industrial era. The warming of the oceans due to global warming has become a major problem for the marine life.

Essay on Impact of Global Warming on Ocean Currents, Ocean Water Salinity and Ocean Temperature – Essay 4 (500 words)

    Introduction

Global warming has had a huge impact on the oceans and marine life. It has increased the ocean temperature, caused acidification of ocean water and brought about many alterations in the bio-geochemistry of our beautiful oceans.

Global Warming Impact on Ocean Currents

Ocean currents flow far and wide and play a significant role in determining the Earth’s climate. Global warming is impacting the ocean currents and this in turn is affecting our climate. The ocean currents are getting weakened due to global warming. As the ice caps melt, fresh water is released into the oceans and this reduces the density of surface water. This makes the water sink down and slows down the current.

Ocean currents bring along various essential nutrients which are necessary for ocean life. Slowing of the ocean currents has resulted in carrying of fewer nutrients. This has disrupted the food chain and is impacting the ocean life badly. The impact is expected to worsen in the years to come as the affect of global warming increases.

Global Warming Impact on Ocean Water Salinity

Research shows that global warming is impacting the ocean water salinity to a great extent. Since the air is getting warmer its capacity to absorb the water is increasing. Hence, greater amount of water is evaporating and this is resulting in high precipitation in many areas.

It has been observed that while the wet areas are getting wetter the dry areas are getting drier. The areas with higher rate of evaporation compared to that of precipitation are getting drier and those with higher rate of rainfall and comparatively lesser rate of evaporation are receiving more rains. This is resulting in the increase in ocean salinity in the parts that are saltier while the parts with fresh water are getting fresher. Melting of ice caps due to global warming is also impacting the salinity of ocean water. It is decreasing the salt content in the water.

Researchers claim that, if the temperature of the Earth’s surface increases further then this will impact the oceans further which in turn will affect the various activities attached to the same.

Global Warming Impact on Ocean Temperature

Just as global warming is increasing the temperature on Earth; it is also increasing the ocean temperature. The ocean water is getting warmer and this is impacting the ocean life immensely. Many species of marine animals are finding it hard to adapt to the changed climate. A number of species of fishes, turtles and other marine creatures have disappeared and many have incurred serious illness due to the increase in ocean water temperature.

The rise in the ocean temperature is also having an erratic impact on the precipitation pattern. Several places on our planet are experiencing erratic rainfall.

    Conclusion

Thus, global warming has vastly impacted the oceans. It has affected the salinity of water making it more saline in certain parts and less saline in others. It has impacted the ocean currents to a large extent. It has also raised the ocean temperature which in turn has taken a toll on the life of the marine creatures.

Long Essay on Impact of Global Warming on Oceans – Essay 5 (600 words)

    Introduction

Greenhouse gases that are a cause of global warming have increased in the atmosphere in the last century. This has not only impacted the surface temperature of Earth but has also had a major impact on our oceans. Oceans and ocean life has been affected deeply due to global warming which is a result of various human activities.

Impacts of Global Warming on Oceans:

    • Increase in Ocean Water Temperature

One of the biggest impacts of global warming on oceans is that it has made the ocean water grow warmer. The oceans absorb the heat from the air and it results in the warming of the ocean water. Research shows that all the oceans on our planet have grown warmer especially in the last fifty years.

It is the top layer of the ocean which has been worst affected by the atmospheric heat though even the water at the bottom hasn’t been left unaffected. Data collated by the researchers indicates that the top layer of the oceans is growing warmer by 0.2 degree Fahrenheit with every passing decade.

The temperature of the ocean water is likely to rise in the times to come and this would impact both the top layer as well as the water that lies deep inside the oceans.

    • Acidification of Ocean Water

The ocean water is not only getting warmer but is also becoming acidic owing to the absorption of harmful gases such as carbon and methane. Chemical reaction caused due to the absorption of these gases by the ocean water is reducing its pH level.

The acidification of ocean water is harming the marine organisms as well as the overall atmosphere. Some of the harmful effects of this phenomenon include decreased immunity of marine creatures and coral bleaching.

    • Changes in Weather Pattern

Oceans play a major role in determining Earth’s climate. Global warming is impacting the oceans which are impacting the climate to a large extent. Erratic climatic conditions being experienced in today’s times are a result of global warming and its impact on the oceans. While certain places on Earth are experiencing extreme rainfall others are suffering from drought. Coastal areas have become more prone to floods due to the rise in the ocean level because of the melting of ice caps and glaciers.

    • Marine Creatures Suffer Due to Global Warming

Marine creatures are one of the most beautiful creations of God. We adore the cute penguins that spend most part of their lives in the oceans, love the semi-aquatic cuddly seals and are mesmerized at the sight of multi-hued fishes shining in the water. But do we know how much harm we are causing to these innocent creatures? The rise in the level of the greenhouse gases is resulting in global warming and this in turn is having numerous negative repercussions on the ocean life.

Several species of fishes and other marine creatures have lost their life due to the rise in the temperature of the ocean water and ocean acidification. Many have gone extinct and several others are likely to disappear soon.

    Conclusion

We humans are destroying our beautiful oceans. Our oceans started deteriorating with the advent of industrial revolution. The inception of numerous factories resulted in the emission of vast amount of harmful gases. The industrial waste added to water and land pollution and further raised the level of harmful gases in our atmosphere. Deforestation, urbanization, increasing use of fuel driven vehicles, burning of fossil fuels and many other human activities are increasing the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Research shows that even if we stop all these activities to bar further emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the ocean water will still continue to get warmer for many years to come and impact our atmosphere adversely.
