    What is a Soundwave?

A sound wave is the movement caused when energy moves from a sound’s starting point. These waves move back and forth, like a stretched-out spring. As they move, they create areas of high and low pressure in the air. We call these high-pressure spots “compressions” and the low-pressure spots “rarefactions.” These pressure changes spread out and let the sound move from one place to another.

    Speed of Sound

The rate at which sound travels through a substance is called the speed of sound. This speed varies depending on the material. Sound moves fastest in solids because the particles in solids are closely packed together. The closer the particles are, the faster energy can be passed between them. Since particles in solids are closely connected, sound travels faster in solids compared to liquids and gases. The following table shows the speeds of sound in various materials.

      Reflection of Sound

Sound reflection is like light reflection. Sound reflection follows these rules:

      • The angle it comes in is the same as the angle it bounces off.
      • The incoming sound, the bounced sound, and an imaginary line called the “normal” are all in one line.

When sound hits a solid surface, it bounces back to where it came from. This bouncing sound is called an echo. Hard things make sound bounce, while soft things soak up sound and make it quiet. If a sound’s pitch is low, it might not bounce back. In big areas with lots of bouncing surfaces, like big rooms or valleys, we might hear several echoes from one sound. This is called reverberation.
