Most Grihapatis were small landowners. There existed a classification among the people in both the northern parts and Southern parts of India. People are usually classified into 3 classes. In this classification, there will be large landowners, landless laborers, and ordinary plowmen and slaves. In the northern part classification of people were Gramabhojaka (large landowners), Grihapatis (small landowners), and Dasa or Karmakara (landless laborers who work on other's land to earn livelihood). Among these Grihapatis were independent farmers. They were often small land owners. Some of them are farmers and some are traders. It was based on their choice to be a farmer or trader.
