Kezia’s fears about her father
Kezia’s father was a figure of fear for her. She avoided him. Before going to work, he would come to her. He would give her a casual kiss. But when he went, Kezia would feel a great relief.
How Kezia comes before father in the evening
In the evening Kezia’s father came home. Kezia would hear his loud voice calling for tea. Kezia’s mother would ask Kezia to be a good girl to take off father’s shoes. When she would take off his shoes, he would ask if she had been a good girl that day. But she was terrified of him. She would stutter due to fear. She, in fact, would try to speak. But she would hesitate due to fear. For Kezia, her father was like a giant.
What happened on a Sunday afternoon
On a Sunday afternoon grandmother asked Kezia to have a nice talk with father and mother. But Kezia always found mother reading and father snoring. So she waited for father. She continued staring at father. She waited till he awoke. When he actually awoke, he asked her not to stare. She looked like an owl.
Kezia makes a birthday gift for father
One day Kezia’s grandmother told her that her father’s birthday was next week. She suggested to Kezia to make him a pin-cushion of yellow silk. So Kezia made a pin-cushion for father. She needed something to stuff the pin-cushion. So she gathered a few sheets of fine paper and put them into it. These sheets belonged to her father. They had an important speech which he was to deliver.
A hue and cry in the house
That night there was a hue and cry in the house. Father’s great speech for the Port Authority had been lost. Rooms were searched. Servants were questioned. Father, went to Kezia’s room. He asked her about them. Kezia didn’t tell a lie. She told him that she had tom those papers.
Father summons Kezia and beats her
Father asked Kezia to come to the drawing room. He was very angry. He was pacing to and fro. Kezia was greatly frightened. He asked Kezia if she had done that. She whispered. Father asked Mother to go to Kezia’s room and fetch those torn papers. Meanwhile, he asked Kezia to. hold out her hands. He beat her on her hands. He did so to teach her not to touch anything that didn’t belong to her.
Kezia’s reaction
Kezia heard this. She replied that what she did was for his birthday. Kezia was beaten on her hands. Hours later, her grandmother had wrapped Kezia in a shawl. She clung to her when she was being rocked in the rocking chair. She sobbed, “What did God make fathers for ?”
The Macdonalds, Kezia’s neighbors
The Macdonalds lived next door to Kezia’s house. They had five children. Father played with the children. Kezia thought that there were different fathers.
Kezia’s mother and grandmother at the hospital
One day Kezia’s mother fell ill. She had to be hospitalized. Kezia’s grandmother was with her Kezia was all alone with Alice, the cook. Kezia asked Alice what would happen if she had a nightmare. But Alice asked her to sleep. She also asked her not to scream and not to wake up her poor father.

But Kezia had a nightmare. She saw a butcher with a knife and a rope. He came near Kezia but she couldn’t move. She screamed and woke up her father. Father came to her bed. He asked her what was the matter. After hearing her, he took Kezia with him.

Kezia’s father lay down beside her. Kezia crept close to him. He asked Kezia to rub her feet against his legs to get them warm. Kezia felt a funny thing. She thought that her father was harder than her grandmother. But it was a nice hardness. Every day he had to work harder. He got too tired to be a Mr. Macdonald. And she had torn up his writing! She stirred. Father asked what was the matter. Kezia told him that her head was on his heart. She told him that he had a big heart. It was beating.

केजिया का पिता उसके लिए भय की आकृति था। उससे वह बचती थी। काम पर जाने से पहले वह उसके पास आता। वह उसे एक आकस्मिक चुम्बन दे देता। परन्तु जब वह जाता तो केजिया को काफी आराम का अनुभव होता।
शाम को केजिया पिता के सामने कैसे आती है।
शाम को केजिया का पिता घर आता। केजिया उसकी चाय के लिए ऊँची आवाज़ सुनती। केजिया की माँ केजिया को अपने पिता के जूते उतारने के लिए अच्छी लड़की बनने के लिए कहती। जब वह जूते उतारती तो पिता उससे पूछता कि क्या उस दिन वह अच्छी लड़की रही। परन्तु वह उससे भयभीत थी। भय के कारण वह तुतला कर बोलती। वास्तव में वह बोलने की कोशिश करती। परन्तु भय के कारण वह हिचकिचाती। केजिया के लिए उसका पिता दानव जैसा था।
एक इतवार दोपहर बाद क्या हुआ
एक इतवार की दोपहर बाद दादी ने केजिया को माता व पिता के साथ बातचीत करने के लिए कहा। परन्तु केजिया ने हमेशा माँ को पढ़ते और पिता को खर्राटे भरते हुए पाया। इसलिए उसने पिता के लिए प्रतीक्षा की। वह पिता की तरफ घूरकर देखती रहती। वह जब तक वह नहीं जागता प्रतीक्षा करती। जब वह वास्तव में जागा तो उसने उसे घूर कर न देखने के लिए कहा। वह उल्लू की तरह दिखती थी।
केजिया पिता के लिए जन्मदिन का उपहार बनाती है।
एक दिन केजिया की दादी ने उसे बताया कि उसके पिता का जन्मदिन अगले सप्ताह था। उसने केजिया को सुझाव दिया कि वह उसके लिए पीली सिल्क का एक पिन-कुशन बनाए। इसलिए केजिया ने पिता के लिये एक पिन कूशन बनाया। उसे पिन-कूशन में भरने के लिये कुछ चीज चाहिये थी। इसलिये उसने पतले कागज की कुछ शीटें लीं और उन्हें उसमें भर दिया। ये शीटें उसके पिता की थीं। इनमें एक महत्वपूर्ण भाषण था जो उन्हें देना था।
घर में शोर-शराबा
उस रात घर में शोर-शराबा हुआ। पिता का पोर्ट अथोरिटी का महान भाषण गुम हो गया था। कमरे ढूँढे गये। नौकरों से पूछताछ की गयी। पिता केजिया के कमरे में गया। उसने उससे उनके बारे में पूछताछ की। केजिया ने झूठ नहीं बोला। उसने उसे बताया कि उसने उन कागजों को फाड़ डाला था।
पिता केजिया को बुलाता है और उसे पीटता है।
पिता ने केजिया को ड्राइंग-रूम में आने के लिए कहा। वह बहुत गुस्से में था। वह इधर-उधर घूम रहा था। केजिया काफी भयभीत थी। उसने केजिया से पूछा कि क्या उसने वह किया था। वह हल्की आवाज में बोली। पिता ने माँ को केजिया के कमरे में जाने के लिए और फटे हुए उन कागजों को लाने के लिए कहा। इस बीच में उसने केजिया को अपने हाथ आगे करने के लिए कहा। उसने उसकी उसके हाथों पर पिटाई की। उसने वैसा उसे यह सिखाने के लिए किया कि वह, जो चीज उसकी नहीं है. उसे न छुए।

मैक्डॉनल्ड केजिया के घर के अगले घर में रहते थे। उनके पाँच बच्चे थे। पिता उन बच्चों के साथ खेला करता था। केजिया ने सोचा कि पिता भिन्न-भिन्न प्रकार के होते हैं।
केजिया की माँ व दादी हस्पताल में
एक दिन केजिया की माँ बीमार हो गयी। उसे हस्पताल में दाखिल करवाना पड़ा। केजिया की दादी उसके साथ थी। केजिया एलिस रसोइया के साथ अकेली थी। केजिया ने एलिस से पूछा कि यदि उसे एक भयानक स्वप्न आ जाये तो क्या होगा। परन्तु एलिस ने उसे सोने के लिए कहा। उसने उसे न चिल्लाने और अपने बेचारे पिता को न जगाने के लिए भी कहा।
केजिया का भयानक स्वप्न
परन्तु केजिया को एक भयानक स्वप्न आया। उसने एक कसाई को चाकू और एक रस्से के साथ देखा। वह केजिया के पास आया परन्तु केजिया हिल नहीं सकी। वह चिल्लाई और पिता को जगा दिया। पिता उसके बिस्तर तक आया। उसने उसे पूछा कि क्या बात है। उसे सुनने के बाद वह केजिया को अपने साथ ले गया।
केजिया की पिता के बारे में बदली हुई राय
केजिया का पिता उसके साथ लेट गया। केजिया उसके साथ जा लगी। उसने केजिया को अपने पैर गर्म करने के लिए उन्हें उसकी टाँगों से रगड़ने के लिए कहा। केजिया को एक अद्भुत चीज का अनुभव हुआ। उसने सोचा कि उसका पिता दादी से अधिक सख्त था। परन्तु यह एक अच्छा सख्तपन था। हरेक दिन उसे काफी मेहनत करनी पड़ती। वह मि. मैक्डॉनल्ड बनने के लिए काफी थक जाता। और उसने उसका लेख फाड़ डाला ! वह हिली। पिता ने उससे पूछा क्या बात है। केजिया ने उसे बताया कि उसका सिर उसके दिल के एकदम ऊपर था। उसने उसे बताया कि उसका दिल काफी बड़ा था। वह धड़क रहा था।
