The Legend of Savitri and Satyavan

Long ago, there was a righteous king named Ashwapati, ruling over the kingdom of Madra. Despite his prosperous reign, he was childless. For years, he worshipped Goddess Savitri to bless him with a child. Pleased with his prayers, the Goddess granted him a boon, and soon his queen gave birth to a beautiful daughter named Savitri.

Savitri grew up to be a wise, virtuous, and radiant young woman. As she reached the age of marriage, her father allowed her to choose her own husband. Accompanied by wise ministers, Savitri began a journey and eventually met Satyavan, the son of King Dyumatsen, who had lost his kingdom and lived in the forest. Though Satyavan was noble and righteous, a sage had predicted his death within a year.

Despite knowing about this, Savitri chose him and declared, “I choose him once, and no one else can be my husband.” Impressed by her resolve, her father agreed, and Savitri married Satyavan and began living with him in the forest.

Satyavan’s Final Day and Savitri’s Vow

As the prophesied day approached, Savitri undertook a strict three-day fast. On the final day—the day of Vat Savitri Vrat—she worshipped the Vat tree and prayed for her husband’s life. Later, she accompanied Satyavan to the forest. As Satyavan started cutting wood, he suddenly felt dizzy and laid his head in Savitri’s lap.

Just then, Yamraj, the Lord of Death, appeared and took Satyavan’s soul. Determined, Savitri followed him, refusing to give up. Yamraj tried to convince her to return, but her devotion and clever words impressed him.

Savitri’s Three Boons

Yamraj offered her three boons (except Satyavan’s life):

1. She asked for her father-in-law’s eyesight to be restored.
2. She requested that her father-in-law regain his lost kingdom.
3. She wished for hundreds of sons with Satyavan.

Realizing the contradiction in the third boon, Yamraj had no choice but to revive Satyavan, thus fulfilling all her wishes.

Savitri’s determination, purity, and love won over death itself. She returned with her husband, and their life was blessed with joy, prosperity, and longevity.

सावित्री का स्वयंवर और सत्यवान से विवाह

जब सावित्री विवाह योग्य हुई, तो राजा ने उसे स्वयं वर चुनने की अनुमति दी। वह कुछ मंत्रियों के साथ वन भ्रमण पर निकली और शाल्व देश के निष्कासित राजा द्युमत्सेन के पुत्र सत्यवान को देखा। सत्यवान एक धर्मपरायण, सत्यवादी और सेवा-भाव रखने वाला युवक था, जो अपने अंधे माता-पिता के साथ वन में निवास करता था।

सावित्री ने सत्यवान को अपना वर चुना। जब वह यह समाचार लेकर लौटी, तो वहां देवर्षि नारद उपस्थित थे। नारद मुनि ने सावित्री से कहा कि सत्यवान तो गुणों में श्रेष्ठ है, लेकिन अल्पायु है – उसकी मृत्यु एक वर्ष के भीतर निश्चित है।

सावित्री ने दृढ़ता से कहा:

“पति एक बार चुना जाता है, मैं सत्यवान को ही अपना पति मानती हूं। चाहे वह अल्पायु हों या दीर्घायु, मैं अपना निर्णय नहीं बदलूंगी।”

राजा अश्वपति ने उसकी इच्छानुसार सत्यवान से उसका विवाह कर दिया।

वनवास और तपस्या

विवाह के बाद सावित्री सत्यवान के साथ वन में रहने लगी और अपने सास-ससुर की सेवा में रम गई। उसे नारद मुनि की बात याद थी, इसलिए वह प्रतिदिन गिनती करती रही।

जब सत्यवान की मृत्यु का दिन पास आया, तब सावित्री ने तीन दिन का उपवास रखा और आखिरी दिन वटवृक्ष के नीचे बैठकर पूजा और व्रत किया। यह वही दिन था जिसे आज वट सावित्री व्रत अमावस्या के रूप में मनाया जाता है।

यमराज और सावित्री का संवाद

उस दिन सत्यवान लकड़ी काटने जंगल गया, सावित्री भी साथ गई। थोड़ी देर बाद सत्यवान को सिर में तेज़ दर्द हुआ और वह सावित्री की गोद में लेट गया। तभी सावित्री ने देखा कि एक काले वर्ण, पीत वस्त्रधारी, तेजस्वी पुरुष वहाँ आए।

उन्होंने कहा, “मैं यमराज हूं। सत्यवान का जीवनकाल पूर्ण हो गया है, अब उसकी आत्मा मुझे ले जानी है।”

यमराज ने सत्यवान की आत्मा अंगूठे के आकार में निकाली और दक्षिण दिशा की ओर चल दिए। सावित्री भी उनके पीछे चलने लगी। यमराज ने कहा, “तुम पीछे मत आओ, यह नियति का नियम है।”

सावित्री ने विनम्रता से उत्तर दिया,

“जहाँ मेरे पति जाएंगे, वहां मैं भी जाऊंगी। पत्नी का धर्म है पति के साथ चलना।”

तीन वरदान और सत्यवान का पुनर्जीवन

यमराज सावित्री की भक्ति, दृढ़ता और मधुर वाणी से प्रभावित हुए और बोले:
“मांगो, तुम्हें जो वर चाहिए, मैं दूंगा। परंतु पति की आत्मा नहीं लौटा सकता।”

सावित्री ने पहला वर माँगा:
“मेरे सास-ससुर की नेत्र ज्योति लौट आए।”
यमराज बोले: तथास्तु।

दूसरा वर मांगा:
“मेरे ससुर को उनका खोया हुआ राज्य वापस मिल जाए।”

तीसरा वर मांगा:
“मुझे सत्यवान से उत्पन्न सौ पुत्रों का वरदान दीजिए।”

“हे पतिव्रता स्त्री! तुम्हारी सच्ची निष्ठा, तपस्या और प्रेम ने मृत्यु को भी पराजित कर दिया। तुम्हें दीर्घ, सुखमय वैवाहिक जीवन का आशीर्वाद देता हूं।”

वापसी और फल

सावित्री सत्यवान के साथ लौट आई। जब वे आश्रम पहुंचे, तो देखा कि उनके सास-ससुर की आंखों की रोशनी लौट चुकी थी और उन्हें उनका राज्य भी वापस मिल गया।

कुछ वर्षों बाद सावित्री को सौ पुत्रों की प्राप्ति हुई और वह पतिव्रता धर्म की प्रतीक बन गई।
