    Artemisinin Structure

    Artemisinin, a natural product isolated from the plant Artemisia annua, is a sesquiterpene lactone with a chemical structure shown below. The molecule consists of a six-membered ring fused to a five-membered ring. The six-membered ring is made up of two isoprene units, while the five-membered ring is made up of a single isoprene unit. The carbon atoms in the rings are numbered as shown in the diagram.

    The carbon atoms in the rings are not all equivalent, and the position of the double bond in the five-membered ring can vary. The two most common forms of artemisinin are shown below.

    The position of the double bond in the five-membered ring can be changed by the addition of a methyl group (CH3), as shown below. This modified form of artemisinin is called artemether.
