Skin cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the skin. The most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer. It begins in the basal cells, which are the cells that line the deepest layer of the skin. Basal cell carcinoma is often a slow-growing cancer that may not cause any symptoms. But, it can sometimes grow quickly and cause a sore that doesn’t heal, or a lump or nodule on the skin.
Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer. It begins in the squamous cells, which are the cells that line the surface of the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma can often be cured if it’s caught early. But, if it’s not treated, it can grow and spread to other parts of the body. Symptoms of squamous cell carcinoma can include a sore that doesn’t heal, a lump or nodule on the skin, or a wart-like growth.
