The Extraction of Metals from their Ores
Hydrolytic Method
The hydrolytic method of protein digestion is a process by which proteins are broken down into their component amino acids by the addition of water. The hydrolytic method is initiated by the enzyme pepsin, which is secreted by the stomach’s chief cells. Pepsin acts on the peptide bonds that hold the amino acids together in a protein, breaking them down into individual amino acids. These amino acids are then absorbed by the small intestine and transported to the liver, where they are used to build new proteins.

Magnetic separation is a process in which magnetically susceptible material is extracted from a mixture using a magnetic force. This separation technique can be used to separate a variety of materials, including metals, minerals, and wastes.
Froth Floatation
Froth flotation is a process for selectively separating minerals from gangue by taking advantage of their different physical properties. The process exploits the difference in hydrophobicity between minerals and gangue. Hydrophobicity is a measure of how strongly a molecule is attracted to water. Gangue is less attracted to water than most minerals, so it is carried to the surface of the water while the minerals remain in the suspension. The process is often used to concentrate ores.
