IIT Seat Matrix 2025 – Everything You Need to Know

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are among the top engineering colleges in India, attracting lakhs of students every year who appear for the JEE Advanced exam with the dream of getting admission. To help students understand how many seats are available in each IIT, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) releases the official IIT Seat Matrix every year. The IIT Seat Matrix 2025 has been released, offering key details about the total number of B.Tech seats, branch-wise distribution, and category-wise reservation.

As per the latest data, there are around 17,740 undergraduate engineering seats available across the 23 IITs for the academic year 2025–26. These include seats for various categories like General (Open), Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL), Scheduled Castes (SC), and Scheduled Tribes (ST), along with PwD (Persons with Disabilities) sub-categories. The seat matrix also mentions gender-neutral and female-only supernumerary seats to promote gender diversity in IITs.

Here are some highlights from the IIT Seat Matrix 2025:

    • IIT Bombay offers approximately 1,368 seats across its popular programs like Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, and more, including reserved and female-only seats.
    • IIT Delhi has around 1,209 B.Tech seats, with category-wise allocation based on the central reservation policy.
    • IIT Madras provides about 1,128 seats for B.Tech and dual-degree courses.
    • IIT Kharagpur, one of the largest IITs, offers nearly 2,561 seats, including B.Tech, B.Arch, and B.S. programs.
    • Newly established IITs like IIT Bhilai, IIT Goa, IIT Jammu, and IIT Palakkad also have dedicated seats across core engineering disciplines, gradually increasing their capacity each year.

The IIT Seat Matrix 2025 plays a vital role in JEE Advanced counselling as it helps students make informed choices during JoSAA counselling rounds. It gives a complete picture of how many seats are offered in each program and IIT, and how they are divided across reservation categories and gender quotas. Students can refer to this information while locking their preferences.

Make sure to check the official JoSAA portal for the most accurate and updated IIT seat data before choice filling and counselling. Understanding the seat matrix thoroughly can help you plan your options better and increase your chances of getting into your dream IIT.

IIT Patna (Total Seats: 817 in 2024; ~1000 in 2025)

(IIT Patna saw a major expansion for 2025, increasing from 817 seats to an expected ~1000+ seats. It introduced around 12 new programs (e.g. Artificial Intelligence & Data Science, and several 5-year B.Tech+MBA dual-degree programs in partnership with IIM Bodh Gaya). For brevity, the detailed breakdown is omitted; however, the seats in each new program follow the standard category split. For example, AI & Data Science (4 Yr B.Tech) has ~60 seats (30 Open including PwD, 6 EWS, 16 OBC, 9 SC, 4 ST). IIT Patna’s total seats by category roughly meet the quotas – about 400 Open, 100 EWS, 270 OBC, 150 SC, 75 ST (including PwD).)

    IIT Roorkee (Total Seats: 1353)

(IIT Roorkee’s 1353 seats are spread across B.Tech programs (e.g. Civil, Mech, Elec, CSE, etc.), 5-year Integrated M.Tech, and B.Arch. In 2025 it added a new Energy Engineering (B.Tech) program. Each program’s seat matrix observes the reservation split. For instance, IIT Roorkee Electrical Engg (4 Yr) has ~95 seats (47 Open, 5 EWS, 26 OBC, 14 SC, 7 ST, plus PwD in each). The overall category totals for IITR’s 1353 seats are approximately: 545 Open, 135 EWS, 365 OBC, 205 SC, 103 ST (including PwD).)

    IIT Ropar (Total Seats: 430)

(IIT Ropar’s ~430 seats cover its B.Tech programs (CSE, EE, ME, CE, etc.). Each follows the standard allocation. For example, IIT Ropar CSE has ~63 seats (31 Open, 3 PwD, 6 EWS, 17 OBC, 9 SC, 4 ST). All programs combined at IIT Ropar adhere to the ~40:27:15:7.5 ratio for Open:OBC:SC:ST (with 10% EWS and PwD sub-quotas).)
