NEET ban in Tamil Nadu: National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET is an entrance exam at the national level which is conducted every year for students for admission to undergraduate medical courses like MBBS, BDS, B.Pharm, and B.Sc. New Delhi: During his Independence Day speech in Chennai on Tuesday, August 15, chief minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, stated that eliminating the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) would require shifting education to the State List from the Concurrent List of the Constitution.

Stalin’s comments follow the deaths of a teenage boy and his father over the weekend, who were both reportedly suicide victims. S. Jagadeeshwaran, a 19-year-old who failed NEET, committed suicide on Saturday night, August 12. A day later, P. Selvasekar, the student’s 48-year-old father, was discovered dead in his Chrompet, Chennai, home. Allegedly, the father took his own life because he was unable to cope with the death of his son.

In a memorable speech to students on Monday, August 14, the chief minister promised to outlaw NEET, something the state’s student body and parents have long demanded. He also advised the students not to take drastic measures.

In his special message, Stalin urged President Droupadi Murmu to grant permission to the state’s NEET exemption Bill as soon as possible, stating that it “was the collective will of the people of Tamil Nadu.” Stalin was criticizing Governor R.N. Ravi for his refusal to sign the bills passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly that would have banned NEET in the state.

The Bill was the “outcome of Legislative consensus, stemming from the collective will of the people of Tamil Nadu,” he had also written to Murmu, emphasizing that “each day of delay in its implementation costs not only valuable medical seats to deserving students but invaluable human lives to our society.” He noted that the Bill was still waiting even though, according to The Hindu, the Tamil Nadu government had clarified some of the points brought up by other Union Ministries.

Stalin’s government had brought Bills on the proposed legislation to ban NEET in the Assembly twice, only to see them returned by the governor. As the matter pertained to the Concurrent List, the Bill was forwarded to the President for her assent.
