The creation of linguistic states was the first and major test for democratic politics in our country. Several former Indian States had their borders altered in 1947 to make way for new States. This was to guarantee that speakers of the same language resided in the same state. Some states were established to acknowledge differences based on culture, ethnicity, or location rather than language. States like Nagaland, Uttarakhand, and Jharkhand are among them. Some national officials were concerned that the demand for the creation of States based on language might cause the nation to fall apart. For a while, the Central Government resisted the linguistic States. However, experience has shown that the country has become more unified due to the creation of linguistic States.
