The establishment of Linguistic States was the first and a major test for democratic politics in our country.In 1947, the boundaries of several of India's former states were altered to create new States to ensure that individuals speaking the same language resided in the same State. Some states were established not based on language, but to recognise cultural, ethnic, or geographical diversity. Among these are Nagaland, Uttarakhand, and Jharkhand. When the proposal for the establishment of States based on language was voiced, several national leaders worried it would lead to the country's fragmentation. The Central Government initially opposed linguistic states. However, history has demonstrated that the emergence of linguistic States has strengthened national unity and has simplified administration.
