    Overview of topic

Biofertilizers are special substances filled with tiny living things that can boost the growth of plants and trees by giving them more of the important stuff they need. These tiny living things include mycorrhizal fungi, blue-green algae, and bacteria. Mycorrhizal fungi are good at taking minerals from organic matter and giving them to plants, while cyanobacteria can grab nitrogen from the air and turn it into a form that plants can use.

Nitrogen fixation is when certain tiny living things change nitrogen molecules into a form called ammonia. This process makes nitrogen ready for plants to use. For example, some bacteria do this, making sure plants have enough nitrogen to grow well.

    Types of Biofertilisers

There are mainly 4 Types of Biofertilizers followed as:

    Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria

Rhizobium is an important type of bacteria that can fix nitrogen symbiotically. These bacteria live with plants, getting food and a place to stay. In exchange, they give nitrogen to the plants, which is essential for their growth.

Loose Association of Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria

Azospirillum is a type of bacteria that helps plants by collecting nutrients from their roots. These bacteria don’t get too close to the plants but still benefit from the nutrients they release. This kind of relationship is called “rhizosphere association,” where the bacteria get food from the plants’ exudates. It’s like a helpful partnership between the bacteria and the plants.

    Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixing Cyanobacteria

Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, form a helpful relationship with various plants. Liverworts, cycad roots, ferns, and lichens are examples of plants that benefit from nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria. Anabaena, a type of cyanobacteria, lives in the leaf pockets of ferns where it fixes nitrogen. When these ferns decay, they release nitrogen that can be used by rice plants. Azolla pinnata, a type of fern found in rice fields, doesn’t directly affect the growth of rice plants.

    Free living Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria

These soil bacteria live freely and help with nitrogen fixation. Examples include Clostridium beijerinckii and Azotobacter. Rhizobium and Azospirillum are the most common types of biofertilizers used.
