    History of in Vitro Fertilization

The first successful in vitro fertilization (IVF) took place in 1978 in the United Kingdom. Louise Brown was the first baby to be born through in vitro fertilization.

Indications for the use of In Vitro Fertilization

IVF may be recommended for couples unable to conceive a child after trying unsuccessfully for a year or those diagnosed with infertility.

    Methods of in Vitro Fertilization

IVF is a process where sperm fertilize an egg outside of the body. The fertilized egg (embryo) is then transferred back into the woman’s uterus to hopefully implant and result in a pregnancy.

There are a variety of methods that can be used in IVF. The most common is “in vitro fertilization with intracytoplasmic sperm injection” (IVF-ICSI). In this method, the sperm is injected directly into the egg. This method is used when there is a problem with the sperm’s ability to fertilize the egg naturally.

    Other methods of IVF include:

    • In vitro fertilization with donor sperm – This is used when the man’s sperm cannot fertilize the egg or when the man is not the child’s biological father.
    • In vitro fertilization with donor eggs is used when the woman’s eggs cannot be fertilized or when the woman cannot carry a pregnancy.
    • In vitro fertilization with frozen embryos is used when there are leftover embryos from a previous IVF cycle.
    • In vitro fertilization with a gestational carrier is used when the woman cannot carry a pregnancy. A gestational carrier is a woman who agrees to carry the baby for the woman and her partner.

Success Rate of in Vitro Fertilization

The success rate of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is the percentage of cycles in which a woman becomes pregnant and gives birth to a live baby. The success rate of IVF varies depending on a woman’s age and other factors.
