History

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is an organization of the Government of India responsible for recruiting staff for various posts in the various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India and in Subordinate Offices. It was established on 4th November 1975, with its headquarters in New Delhi.

The genesis of the Staff Selection Commission can be traced back to the year 1946, when the Government of India decided to constitute the ‘Subordinate Services Commission’ to regulate the recruitment of non-technical posts in the Government of India. Later on 26 September 1977, this Subordiante Service Commission was re-constituted as the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) to regulate the recruitment of Group ‘C’ and Group ‘D’ non-technical posts in the Government of India.

On 21 May 1999, through the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, the Government of India redefined the Staff Selection Commission functions. These new rules and regulations took effect on 1 June 1999. Annually, the SSC holds a Combined Graduate Level Examination to recruit non-government personnel for various positions.

SSC has its headquarters at New Delhi. Also, it has seven Regional offices located at Prayagraj, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai, Bangalore and New Delhi. Additionally, it has two Sub-Regional offices at Raipur and Chandigarh.
