    It was a ghost town. No one lived there any more. They had either died or been forcibly evacuated. The fields were barren. Nothing grew. Nothing ever would again. There was no bird- song. No rabbit peered at me. No cow endlessly chewed. No horse neighed.
    Natasha caught me up as we boarded the bus marked MOSCOW. “Thank you for coming with me”, she said. “I wanted to see the graves and the house again, before I die.” (A Tale of Three Villages)

    It was hot day. A traveller going to village, stopped a cart for lift. Cart’s man demanded ten rupee.
    They stopped for midday meal, traveller sat under the cart, cart’s man under tree. They started journey after the midday meal. Traveller reached village. He gave the cart’s man a ten rupee note.
    Cart’s man demanded ten rupee towards fare and ten rupees for shade. The village head settled the issue by saying “Look. Take the two ten rupee notes. One is in the traveller’s hand. The other is the shade of the note.”

    Ants display strange social life. “Might is right” theory exists among them. Some ants are made captivated and they are forced to work as slaves. Beetles and crick­ets live along with the ants and clean up their nests. Ants play games, look after the sick and have funeral rites. No one is allowed to be lazy. A naturalist did an experi­ment by keeping an ant covered with mud till its head. A fellow ant saw this, but found it difficult to take it out. Then it brought a few more companions and helped their fellow to come out. Ants also have reasoning powers. They cross a stream by going over the bodies of their living companions.

    16.Read the following passage carefully.
    Nowadays machines can easily recognise and read printed words. Autopilots, which are computerised machines, can fly aircrafts. These intelligent machines can also recognise and respond to sound and voice and also learn to rectify mis­takes committed. Computers can even play chess so brilliantly that they some­times outwit human beings. The whole world was stunned when an IBM Computer defeated the World Champion Gary Kasparov in a game of chess. But does this mean that artificial intelligence is superior to the natural intelligence of man ?
    A computer carries out a series of operations as per the programmes developed by computer programmers. This means that the human intelligence works behind the artificial intelligence of machines. Artificial intelligence has its limitations as it depends on the amount of stored information in it to make a decision, whereas natural intelligence is not handicapped by any such limitations.
