    History of HCLTech

    HCL started in 1976. It was founded by Shiv Nadar and seven engineers. All were former employees of Delhi Cloth & General Mills. The company first made calculators to earn capital. It was initially named Microcomp Limited. On 11 August 1976, the name changed to Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL).

    In 1978, HCL developed India’s first microcomputer. HCL developed a client-server system, a networking operating system, and an RDBMS in 1983. HCL Technologies started out as HCL Enterprise’s research and development branch. At first, HCL focused on hardware products. Later, it shifted to software and IT services.

    On 12 November 1991, HCL Technologies became a separate company. It was first registered as Hindustan Computers Overseas Limited. This unit focused on software and technology development. HCL started enterprise IT infrastructure services in 1993.. It won a contract to build India’s first floorless electronic stock exchange for NSE.

    In July 1994, HCL Overseas Limited was renamed HCL Consulting Limited. It changed its name to HCL Technologies Limited on October 6, 1999. This name better reflected its IT services focus. Between 1991 and 1999, HCL expanded globally. It entered the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific markets. HCL built strong software development capabilities worldwide.

    IPO and Expansion of HCL

    HCL went public on 11 January 2000. It issued 14.2 million shares during its IPO. By the early 2000s, HCL Comnet expanded its services. It moved from VSAT to network security and IT infrastructure services.

    HCL and Deutsche Bank established a joint venture in 2001. HCL acquired a 51 percent share in Deutsche Software, which later changed its name to DSL Software. L bought the remaining 49% of DSL Software in 2004. DSL became part of HCL’s banking technology division.

    In 2003, HCL won a project with Airbus. It developed embedded software for Airbus A340’s warning system. That same year, HCL sold its stake in HCL Perot Systems. For more than $105 million, Perot Systems acquired the stake of Hindustan Computers Limited.

    In 2005, HCL expanded to Northern Ireland. UK Prime Minister Tony Blair announced this in 2006. In 2008, Hindustan Computers Limited acquired the UK-based Axon Group for £440 million. HCL merged Axon with its enterprise application services. EAS revenue grew from 9% to 22% within three years.

    In 2015, HCL became Manchester United’s digital technology partner. In 2017, HCL and IBM announced a strategic partnership. HCL took over IBM’s Lotus Software, Notes, Domino, and Sametime.

    Actian, a US company, was acquired by HCL and Sumeru Equity Partners in 2018 for $330 million. For $100.2 million in 2021, HCL America acquired the remaining 19.6% of Actian. Actian became the data and analytics division of HCL Software.

    In 2019, HCL acquired software products from IBM. These included AppScan, BigFix, Commerce, Connections, and Unica. In 2021, HCLTech’s revenue crossed $10 billion. In 2022, HCL Technologies changed its name to HCLTech. That year, HCLTech acquired Confinale AG, a wealth solutions company.

    In 2023, HCLTech bought the German automotive firm ASAP Group for $279 million.HCLTech and Verizon Business inked a $2.1 billion agreement in August 2023. This was for managed network services. In May 2024, HCLTech acquired assets of HPE’s Communications Technology Group. The deal was valued at $225 million.

    In August 2024, HCLSoftware planned to buy Zeenea for €24 million. Zeenea is a French data management platform. Zeenea will continue under Actian in HCLSoftware’s division after the acquisition.

    HCLTech Operations

    HCLTech operates in 60 countries. It has more than 200 delivery centers worldwide. The company also runs 150 innovation labs globally. The headquarters of HCLTech is located in Noida, India. HCLTech offers services in Engineering, Digital, Cloud, AI, & Software. The business of HCLTech is divided into three parts. These are IT and Business Services, Engineering and R and D Services (ERS), and HCL Software.

    HCL Software

    HCLTech started its software division called HCLSoftware in 2019. This followed the acquisition of IBM’s software tools. HCLSoftware’s key products include BigFix, AppScan, Connections, Commerce Cloud, Digital Experience, Notes, Sametime, iNotes, and Unica. Actian is part of HCLSoftware’s data and analytics division. Actian’s products include Informix, Actian Data Platform, Ingres, Zen, and NoSQL. In the financial year 2023–24, HCLSoftware earned ₹11,692 crore or $1.4 billion.
