    History of NEET Exam

The Medical Council of India (MCI) proposed a common entrance test for admission to medical courses in India in 2010. The proposal was challenged by the Supreme Court of India, which instructed MCI to conduct a single entrance test starting in 2013. Despite this directive, some states were against this move and opted to continue administering their separate entrance exams. AIIMS, JIPMER, IMS-BHU, KMC Manipal & Mangalore and CMC Vellore are some of the prestigious medical colleges that conducted their own entrance tests.

Finally, in 2016, the Indian government implemented the NEET exam as a common entrance test for admission to medical courses in both government and private medical colleges throughout the country. The first NEET exam was held on May 5, 2013, and it has since remained the exclusive entrance exam for medical courses in India. However, the exam has faced multiple legal challenges, and its structure and regulations have gone through various revisions over time.

The first NEET was a single-day, pen-and-paper-based test. A total of 1,686,717 students appeared for the exam, and only 6.1% of the candidates qualified. In 2016, the NEET exam was conducted in two phases. 11,38,890 students appeared for the exam, and only 6.3% of candidates qualified.

In 2017, the NEET exam was conducted in three phases. 14,00,000 students appeared for the exam, and only 6.5% of candidates qualified. The qualifying percentile for general category candidates was 50%. In 2018, the NEET exam was conducted in two phases. A total of 13,36,000 students appeared for the exam, and only 6.3% of candidates qualified. The qualifying percentile for general category candidates was 50%.

    Significance of the NEET Exam

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is a single entrance examination that is conducted to screen candidates for admission to various courses like MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and Veterinary Science. This exam has been made compulsory for all the medical and dental courses offered by government and private colleges in India. The NEET exam is considered to be one of the toughest exams in India.

NEET has significantly revolutionized the medical education sector in India. It has brought a sense of uniformity in the selection process of students for medical and dental courses. It has also made the selection process more transparent and fair. This has provided a level playing field to all the students from different backgrounds, who are vying for admission to medical and dental colleges.

NEET has also made the process of admissions simpler and easier. Earlier, students had to appear for multiple entrance exams for admission to different medical and dental colleges. But now, with the introduction of NEET, they can appear for a single exam to secure a seat in any medical or dental college of their choice. This has reduced the burden and stress of appearing for multiple entrance exams.

NEET has also helped in creating a pool of talented doctors and dentists in India. It has enabled colleges to select candidates based on their merit and not based on their financial background. This has ensured that only the best and most deserving students get admission to the top medical and dental colleges in India.

NEET has provided a much-needed boost to the medical education sector in India. It has opened up new vistas of opportunities for students, who previously had to face a lot of hurdles in getting admission to top medical and dental colleges in India.
