History of Area

The area now known as the Bronx was originally inhabited by the Siwanoy band of the Lenape Native Americans. The area was called Rananchqua by the Siwanoy, meaning “the place where we hunt deer”. The Dutch called the area Bronck’s Landt, after Jonas Bronck, who settled there in 1639. The first English settlers arrived in 1643.

    The Bronx was part of Westchester County until 1874, when it was annexed to New York City. The Bronx was an independent borough of New York City from 1898 to 1974, when it was merged with Manhattan and Brooklyn to form the current City of New York.
