How to Write Numbers in Words?
The rules of writing out numbers in words have been blown out of proportion. We must know the place value of any number to be able to write it in word form. Let us see how below.
- One’s, a number from 1 to 9 in place value, is written as one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight and nine. The lowest number at knockout place is ten, which is written as ten in words.
- Words such as eleven through nineteen are used for numbers between 11 and 19; twenty follows thereafter.
- Twenty onwards the numbers follow this pattern and are written as thirty forty fifty sixty seventy eighty ninety, etc when they are put into words.
- These leading numerals relate to these words which precede them starting from one to nine for example twenty- one ,twenty- two.
For instance if we had to write Rupees Forty Thousand only in words it would appear
40,000 – Forty thousand rupees only.

Tips to Learn Numbers in Words
It is important for students to learn numbers in word conversion. Below are a few tips to learn the number to word conversion easily.
- Write the figures from 1 to 10 on a distance of paper and write their spellings.
- Memorise all the spellings of 1 to 10 since the basics of all the number names are calculated on these.
- After 10, 11 – eleven and 12 – twelve, sound analogous.
- Now, flashback after 12, we’ve to write 13 to 19, adding- teen as suffixes, similar as thirteen, fourteen and so on. After 19, 20 is written as an extended form of two, similar to twenty, twenty-one, twenty- two, and so on.
- From then, you have to memorise all the multiples of 10, similar as 20, 30, 40, 50, and so on. Analogously, after every multiple of 100, 1000,etc., the number is written in the same format.
